Simply put, the people leadership training most managers get is inadequate. If provided at all, the vast majority of the training is tied only to having difficult conversations, often times using the trendy feedback approach of the day (to mixed results). So called “manager training” then shifts its focus on more executive-style skills such as thinking strategically or learning how to influence so that they can start getting more involved in increasingly senior work. While these are important skill sets to learn without question, focusing on them diminishes the most important aspect of a manager's role, which is to manage their people.
